When
he was 18, Luke met President Bill Clinton. It was
a wonderful event, full of hope and meaning. Everything
was set to go perfectly - if only Luke hadn’t
been yelling at Bill interrupting his speech on AIDS,
in front of a packed auditorium and the world’s
media cameras. Some things about that day we’re
crazy. Luke had temporarily legally changed his last
name to “Sissyfag” (yup, we’re not
kidding, he was a silly kid). But when the next day
the New York Times called Luke’s concerns “only
fair” on its editorial page, it was clear that
there was more than a just some fired-up kid. There
was passion and a commitment to helping others.
A
lot of time has gone by, and a lot’s changed
since the early 90’s. Once a clear critic of
the Clintons, Luke has grown-up and is now one of
their biggest supporters.
Having
created and produced documentaries as well as a pilot
for a TV comedy series, Luke’s work has also
focused on bringing good ideas to good causes. Working
with Jack Lemmon and Larry King on a “fur labeling”
voter initiative in Beverly Hills was a chance to
warn consumers about animal cruelty. Creating the
pet-adoption promoting “Save-A-Pet Show,”
Luke teamed up with stars like Drew Barrymore and
Kelsey Grammer to help 1-800-Save-A-Pet.com find homes
for our nation’s homeless pets. Luke’s
work has been the on-air talk of names from Howard
Stern and Jon Stewart, to Rush Limbaugh and David
Letterman. Luke’s many media appearances run
the gamut from CNN’s Inside Politics and Donahue,
on down to MTV and Extra!
